Press Release for Morehouse Baseball Alumni Association
Atlanta, GA- In honor of homecoming, over fifty alumni from the baseball program gathered at Gresham Park to participate in the inaugural alumni game exhibition against current players. In addition, a group of former Maroon Tiger baseball players used the experience to launch the Morehouse Baseball Alumni Association. The game was sponsored in part by Steelo Sports, the only African American-owned baseball glove brand worn in Major League Baseball. Alumni from a span of fifty years came from all over the country to raise over $1,000 for the program, in addition to connecting with the program's current players.
The Morehouse Baseball Alumni Association (MHBAA) is a 501c3 pending organization that was created to enhance and support the Morehouse College baseball program experience for players, alumni, and supporters. The initiative was started by a group of recent Morehouse College graduates who want to bridge the gap between alumni and current players.
“The Morehouse Baseball Alumni Association was created with the sole intention of enhancing the baseball experience for these young men by providing ample resources for them to succeed both on and off the field. It is our hope to also provide the much needed intimate network of Morehouse baseball alumni as reassurance of a loving community that genuinely cares about their growth as Men of Morehouse.” Kaelan Ashford Jones, ℅ 2020, is currently the President of the MHBAA and Youth Content Coordinator for Major League Baseball.
Notable alumni attendees included Cedrick Richmond (Former Director of the Office of Public Engagement of the United States), Jason Davis (Coordinator, Pro Player Evaluation at New York Mets), Robert Mitchell (Former Morehouse College Head Baseball Coach) and Grant Bennett (2021 Nike Yardrunner).
“Today was a beautiful feeling. We loved bringing the alumni guys back out to hang with the younger guys today. The entire event was a tremendous experience and great opportunity for us to come together as a program. Now the younger players can put a face to a name and that is a huge part of the true brotherhood we are building as a program.” Antonio Grissom, Head Baseball Coach at Morehouse College.
The organization plans to host impactful special projects and programming for student athletes on the team. The alumni association plans for its next activation to be during the Spring of 2023.
